Composite Wood Baseball Bats

A baseball bat is club looking bat that is used in the sport of baseball. Baseball bats are made out of either aluminum or wood. Different players prefer either bat depending on their style of swinging. While aluminum bats are supposed to be more durable many players prefer the wooden baseball bats since the barrel offers better flexibility when hitting the ball compared to aluminum bats. Fairly new in baseball are composite wood bats. These bats are made of wood with a mixture of other materials. Initially used in softball, these composite wood baseball bats are making their way into professional baseball.

What makes composite wood baseball bats unique is that they offer different stiffness to strength ratios than aluminum or wood bats. Aluminum bats are sturdier than wooden bats, which mean that they are stiffer than wooden bats. This affects a player’s swing in that it the bat vibrates more and gives the player a sharper sting. The stiffness in the barrel, however, accounts for strength in the shot, increasing the range of each swing. Wooden bats work in the opposite way. While the softer material results in less stiffness, meaning less sting for the player, the power in each hit is relatively lower than that of an aluminum bat. With wooden bats, the level of strength and stiffness also depends on the type of wood used. This is the factor that decides which bat suits each player. Players, therefore, have to choose between higher stiffness and strength, sacrificing the other factor.

With composite wood baseball bats, however, players no longer have to choose between strength and stiffness. These bats are designed in such a way that the composite wood baseball bats are able to offer players equal levels of stiffness and strength. While the main part of the composite wood baseball bats is a wooden bat, they also use materials such as carbon, glass and even Kevlar. Some of these composite bats do not contain wood at all. They are made of plastic resins reinforced with carbon or Kevlar fibers. Regardless, these bats are comparatively more expensive than either wooden or aluminum bats. The reason for this is the cost of carbon or Kevlar fibers.

Composite wood baseball bats tend to have higher stiffness in their handles to minimize the sting in each hit, to give the hitter better grip of the bat. The barrel on composite wood baseball bats, on the other hand, have a much lower stiffness to increase the elasticity which increase the range of each hit greater than those offered by aluminum bats. The only drawback of composite wood baseball bats is the high cost and the relative durability compared to aluminum and wooden bats.
